Introduction

Over the past decade, social media has experienced a rapid rise in popularity and has become part of the daily life of millions of people. In the United States, for example, the social media usage among adults has increased from 5% in 2005 to 69% in 2018. 

Facebook and YouTube are the social media sites with the widest international usage. They are followed in popularity by WhatsApp, Instagram, WeChat, QQ, LinkedIn, Twitter, and other social media platforms.

Below, we will give a brief description of some of the most important social media platforms. Note that Facebook and YouTube are so important that we have given them individual subpages. 

Twitter

Twitter was created in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams. It distinguished itself from other social media platforms by adopting a format that only allowed users to write short posts. The initial limit was 140 characters, but after 2017, Twitter doubled the character limits in all languages except Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Twitter gained a lot of popularity because it offers different possibilities from other social media platforms. For example, Twitter is widely used for microblogging.
