How did the British Empire affect India?

The legacy of the British Empire

The legacy of the British Empire in India is often disputed. Many Western and British scholars tend to focus on the positive impact of the imperial rule in India, arguing that the British modernised India. Some scholars that have supported this point of view are Alfred Loyal, J.F. Stephen, and W.W. Hunter.

Many Indian scholars, on the other hand, tend to focus on the negative consequences of imperial rule. They believe imperialism destroyed Indian economy, especially trade and craft, and also consider the British responsible for promoting regionalism which eventually led to the partition of British India. Some scholars that uphold these views are Dadabhai Nauroji and R.C. Dutta.
