Gun violence has been a constant issue in the US since the second half of the 20th century. The issue has been getting worse since the 2000s.
According to the BBC, around 40% of Americans owned a gun or lived in a house with one in 2017. Also, data shows that guns caused more than 11,000 deaths (murder or manslaughter) in 2016. In total, 64% of homicides in the US in 2016 were gun-related.
A 2011 survey also cited by the BBC also revealed that there are about 90 firearms per 100 residents in the US. Data from 2013 showed that there are about 500 accidental deaths per year due to misuse of guns. Because of increased gun-related violence, about 46% of Americans are in favor of stricter gun laws according to a 2018 Gallup poll.
