In “Talking Turkeys!!” by Benjamin Zephaniah the main theme can be put broadly as animal rights. However, adjacent themes are that of ignorant consumerism and vegetarianism.
By picking the example of Christmas turkeys, who are usually consumed during winter holidays, the poet actually touches upon the issue of animal rights. His whole poem is an appeal designed to make people see that birds/animals are equal with humans. For this reason, he uses personification, making the turkeys in his poem act and talk like humans:
“Turkeys hav brains an turkeys feel pain
In many ways like yu an me.” (p. 29, ll. 23-24)
Furthermore, the poet clearly points out that turkeys should have an equal right to life and that more people should be aware of this:
“Dey all hav a right to a life,” (p. 29, l. 14)
