“Carapace” by Romesh Gunesekera begins by telling us that a young Sri Lankan woman and her family are waiting for the visit of a rich man living in Australia, called Anura Perera, who is supposed to marry the young woman. The woman pays a visit to her local boyfriend, Vijay, at the restaurant he works in to tell him about the visit of the Australian man. 

She had met her boyfriend at a local disco with the occasion of a birthday party. Vijay is a simple man, a cook at a local beach restaurant. When the woman tells him about Anura Perera and asks Vijay to tell her what is their future as a couple, the cook avoids giving her a definite answer and invites her to the movies instead.
