This is Studienett’s guide to the exam set from Vår 2021 for the new written exam in Engelsk fellesfag, Studieforberedende (SF).

The exam consists of four parts:

Del 1: “Lytting og lesing”, which tests your ability to understand various texts.
Del 2: “Videreformidling”, which tests your ability to pass on or summarize information from various texts.
Del 3: “Samhandling”, which tests your ability to express your own points of view in response to various texts.
Del 4: “Skriftlig produksjon”, which tests your ability to reflect on a specific topic or analyze texts.

Note that “text” may also refer to images, drawings, sound clips, and the like.

This particular study guide focuses on the tasks in the exam set and only refers to the preparation material when relevant. We help you understand the tasks and texts in the exam set and give you examples of how to complete the tasks.

Genre and rhyme

When it comes to the genre of “Advice from a Caterpillar”, there are two ways to go about it. It says in the preparation material that the poem is written in the sonnet form. Especially if you have worked with sonnets in class, you could go into this. Otherwise, just refer to the genre as a poem.

A sonnet is a fourteen-line poem where the last two lines - the couplet - sum up the message of what has been said in the sonnet. A sonnet rhymes in the following rhyme scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GG. We can see all of this in “Advice from a Caterpillar”.

There is a second type of rhyme in the text: alliteration. This is when the first letter of a word is repeated in a word that follows closely. One example is line 4: “dared to dream”. The rhyme on “d” underlines this line, making us reflect on the importance of dreaming.
