The original use of the word hero derives from the idea of providing protection. Today, perhaps a hero is better defined as simply someone we look up to.

Read the three openings from the novels in Appendix 1: Us by David Nicholls, Sweetland by Michael Crummey and The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd.
Discuss some of the literary techniques the writers use to draw the reader into the story. Use examples from the openings in your answer.

Read the extract in Appendix 2 from The Century’s Daughter by Pat Barker in which we meet the frustrated character Frank.
Discuss how the reader is led to sympathise with Frank. Compare this to how the reader is led to sympathise with a character from another English-language literary text. Use examples from both literary texts in your answer.

Read the poems and lyrics about God in Appendix 3 and compare and contrast the ideas of God and religion presented in each poem.
2D
Compare and contrast the characterisation of two heroes from English-language literary texts or films and discuss what qualities they have that make them heroes.
