Task 3C: Drawing the reader into the story

We will now focus on Task 3C. In the following section, we will turn our attention to the three texts in Appendix 3 which are excerpts from: “The Casual Vacancy” by J.K. Rowling, “Pretty Little Liars: Wanted” by Sara Shepard and “Speak” by Laurie Halse Anderson.

We will briefly outline each of the texts and give you some points that can help you discuss some of the literary techniques the writers use to draw the reader into the story and how successfully each text captures the reader’s attention.

Outline: “Sunday”

The text is titled “Sunday” and is an excerpt from the novel The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling, published in 2012. The book was Rowling's first publication since the Harry Potter series and her first novel for adult readership.

The excerpt in the exam set introduces the reader to Barry Fairbrother and his wife and family on the day of their wedding anniversary.

Barry had been struggling all day with a headache and with writing a newspaper article. This made his wife, Mary, upset....
