After the success of the new Disney animation film Frozen it appears the film caught more than the winter spirit from Norway; according to commentators on the Fox News Channel’s programme ‘Fox & Friends’, Frozen is emasculating the American male by showing strong and decisive female characters.

Read the text below in which Robert Albers comments on the views expressed by the Fox commentators. Comment on the writer’s attitude and how he uses language and literary devices to get his opinions across to the reader. Use examples from the text.

Briefly discuss what you think the poster below reveals about the way Disney sees the world.

According to Fox News, it would appear that we are not ready for literature that depicts strong female characters, or are we?

Discuss the role of female characters in English-language literature and/or films you have studied in your English course and how you think the Fox commentators would have reacted to them.

b)
Read the extract from The Mellowhorn Home below and comment on how setting is used to create mood and atmosphere. Compare this to how setting is used in another English-language literary text you have studied this year. Use examples from your chosen literature and the text
below.

c)
The extracts Middlemarch and NW in Appendix 1 are examples of two different literary styles: one is called Victorian, the other Modernist.

Read the two extracts and discuss what makes them typical of their period. Give examples from the texts.

d)
Read the two poems ‘The Apple Orchard’ by Dana Gioia and ‘A Very Short Song’ by Dorothy Parker below and through your analysis of them discuss the thoughts and emotions you think the poets are sharing with us.
