Task 2D: The global challenge of people smuggling

In this part, we will give you some ideas and points to consider when you discuss the global challenge of people smuggling, based on the materials in Appendix 2 in the exam set.

Text 1 in Appendix 2 is a short opinion on people smuggling, extracted from an article posted on the Transnational Organized Crime website, titled “Smuggling of migrants: the harsh search for a better life”. The main idea in the extract is that people smuggling is a criminal act and a global concern. 

Text 2 in Appendix 2 is a short comment from a refugee.  The refugee considers that politicians are too hasty in criminalising people smuggling. He draws attention to the factors that push people into resorting to smugglers.

The statistics in Appendix 2 show that there are about 27 million slaves in the world today and 1. 2 million trafficked children in the world.  Most of the victims of human trafficking come from Africa and Asia, closely followed by Europe.  Trafficked persons end up as prostitutes, domes...
