Task 1: Two texts on climate change

For Task 1, you have to comment on the differences in purpose and language features of two texts by Naomi Klein and Arnold Schwarzenegger in Appendix 1 (1A) and on the message of a cartoon (1B).

In what follows, we will outline each of the two texts and the cartoon and offer you some guidance for the task requirements.

Text 1 in Appendix 1 is part of the book This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate by Naomi Klein, published in 2014.

In the excerpt, the author discusses the way climate change affects the reproduction process of several species. The eggs of the sea turtle are affected by the high temperature of the sand. The third question is an imagination exercise in which readers are invited to pick being in one of two sealed rooms; one with a car running on gasoline or one with an electrical car.

In the end, Schwarzenegger claims he does not care about whether people believe in climate change or question it and points out that he hopes people will simply make the logical smart choice for a better future, which is clean energy.

The cartoon in task 1B shows animals on an ark and people gathered at the 2040 Climate Summit on Mount Everest which is surrounded by water. The speaker announces that the particip...
