The main theme of the short story “Clerk Wanted” by Dennis Thorp is deception. The most obvious deception in the story is committed by Desmond. He tricks both Colshaw and Mr Winfield so he can keep his job. The dialogue implies that he has tricked two other candidates in the same way before the story starts. In his interaction with Colshaw, Desmond pretends to be the manager in charge of the company and tries to convince him that this is not a place he would like to work (p. 23, ll. 10-12). 

Desmond also tricks Mr Winfield, by claiming that there were no visitors. Mr Winfield does not suspect his deception. Mr Winfield appears all the more naïve since it is possible that Desmond has also tampered with his car several times: “ ‘That terrible ...
