The short story “Clerk Wanted” by Dennis Thorp is centered around what appears to be a job interview for the position of accounts clerk. The candidate, Eric Colshaw, arrives at 9:30 a.m. and finds Desmond sitting in the manager’s office. 

Colshaw assumes Desmond is Mr Winfield, the manager. Throughout the interview, Desmond is rude to Colshaw. He repeatedly gets his name wrong, he gives Colshaw a bad chair and then accuses him of being drunk when he almost falls off. He asks if Colshaw was fired from his last job. Colshaw tells Desmond he left because they closed the office in town, and he did not want to move to Birmingham. Desmond says he is ready to hire Colshaw for a lower salary and suggests that Colshaw could take the rest of the money ill...
