Structure

“A Very Short Story” by Ernest Hemingway revolves around the consequences of a single event in the life of an American soldier from Chicago: he is wounded in the war and he is taken to a hospital in Padua, Italy, where he falls in love with a nurse. Although the two of them hope to get married and move together to the US, several aspects prevent their relationship from having a happy ending. Because the story is very short, so are the plot elements (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution).
