John Steinbeck was born in California in 1902. Before his death in 1968, he had written 27 books and received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. The Pearl is one of Steinbeck’s sixteen novels and is inspired by a story he heard in La Paz in 1940. Steinbeck’s version of this story, about a poor Mexican man who finds the pearl of the world, can teach us a lot about greed and oppression. It also shows how the colonial capitalism was at this time and what conditions the natives lived under. This text will be a literary analysis of the novella The Pearl and it will discuss the setting, the point of view, the plot and the conflict.
