Novel extract: The Grapes of Wrath page 206 (John Steinbeck)
John Steinbeck wrote the Grapes of Wrath in 1939, and it won the Pulitzer Prize as his best-known work.
Describes: devastating effects of the Dust Bowl. In the years 1930 to 1936 there was a series of dust storms on the Great Plains. When drought hit, the once so fertile soil became dust and blew away.
In his novel Steinbeck describes with authority the lives of a tenant farmers from Oklahoma who, unable to make a living, became migrant workers in California.
